What is an e-invoice?

An e-invoice is a machine-readable invoice (XML, or a PDF with XML embedded) rather than a picture of one. The EU is making them mandatory for business-to-business invoicing country by country through 2028, so tax authorities can see transactions in real time. Formats follow the European standard EN 16931: XRechnung, Factur-X/ZUGFeRD and Peppol BIS 3.0. A plain PDF, however pretty, does not count.

Frequently asked

My country isn't on the list. Am I affected?

Probably yes if you sell B2B into Europe: the obligation attaches to the transaction's country, not where you are based.

What do I do with the generated XML file?

Upload it to your Peppol access point, accounting software or (in France) a registered platform. They handle certified delivery. The file itself is the compliant e-invoice.

Is this free?

Yes. The generator and every guide are free, supported by ads. Your invoice data never leaves your browser.
